A night out

Last night the boy child and I set off to Sydney's Newtown to see Jools Holland and his orchestra.

I started with the wardrobe issue, restricted to wearing sneakers at the moment and with my favourite jeans in the wash it was a challenge to put together an outfit I would want to wear but I borrowed a shirt and vest from the boy and managed to cobble something together.

The evening was rainy and by the time we got there it was dark, parking can be challenging to say the least and I started to wonder whether it was worth the effort.
In a minor miracle, a parking spot appeared and I sucessfully manouvred into a space little bigger than the car. We made the walk up to the main road, jazz was playing somewhere nearby and my appetite was whet.
Newtown is probably Sydney's biggest restaurant and theatre district, very cosmopolitan with an alternative vibe.

The theatre was jumping, the bar/cafe was atmospheric with it's leather banquette seating and posters from an eclectic range of acts. We bought a large lemony shortbread which was accidentally devoured during the wait for coffee.

We took our seats and enjoyed the supporting act Imelda May.
The time eventually came for Jools and his band to take the stage.
And they were FANTASTIC!
Jools can play piano like nobody's business, there was some great guitar, unforgettable drumming, sweet trombones and sexy sax.
Reggae icon Rico Rodriguez sang and played trom, the man was unbelievably cool and singer Ruby Turner wowed us with her wonderful voice.
There were two encores, the first of which was "Enjoy Yourself"

It's worth digesting the words of this one

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink.
The years go by, as quickly as a wink.
Enjoy yourself, Enjoy yourself,
It's later than you think.

You work and work
For years and years
You're always on the go.
You never take a minute off,
Too busy making dough.
Someday, you say, you'll have your fun
When you're a millioniare.
Imagine all the fun you'll have
In some old rocking-chair.

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink.
The years go by, as quickly as a wink.
Enjoy yourself, Enjoy yourself
It's later than you think.

You're gonna take that ocean trip
No matter come what may.
You got your reservations
But you just can't get away.
Next year, for sure, you'll see the world,
You'll really get around;
But how far can you travel
When you're six feet underground?

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink.
The years go by, as quickly a as wink.
Enjoy yourself, Enjoy yourself
It's later than you think.

Get out and see the world...
You worry when the weather's cold,
You worry when it's hot.
You worry when you're doing well,
You worry when you're doing not.
It's worry, worry all of the time,
You don't know how to laugh.
They'll think of something funny
When they write your epitaph.

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink.
The years go by, as quickly as wink.
Enjoy yourself, Enjoy yourself
It's later than you think.

  2. I've never seen Jools Holland live but every New Year's Eve there's a Jools Holland show on TV which we always watch. He's a great musician. Next time we're in Sydney we'll have to take a peek at Newtown.

Good song, my own sentiments exactly!

Fancy not giving a MiD to the trumpet players in your music description!

  9. jo,
jools holland is a jazz pianist from the uk. he tours here now and then so you might have heard ads for the shows.
you could look him up on you tube if that kind of thing grabs you
