cant stop em for trying

most of the birds in the loosely termed aviary are siblings and they dont choose partners toowell so they have produced a clutch or two of bad eggs with sick chicks. some died and some we euthanised. we took the nesting boxes away to stop the little blighters doing it all over again but i guess the whole procreation urge is pretty unfightable cos there it is: a nest on the floor, out in the open and vulnerable. yesterday i had a bird sittng in a corner and today i have a nest full of eggs.

  1. What sort of birds? Sorry, if I should already know. And yes, the mating instinct does seem to be invincible.

  2. sorry EC, i never told you, they are zebra finches. and since i wrote the post they have started to deconstruct the nest. i think they are working on one in the shrub that's in the cage. far more sensible!

  3. We feed lots of native birds, and have observed that the expression 'bird brained' is sometimes all too apt.

  4. So rather than getting rid of the eggs you're hoping the next lot of chicks will be healthier than the last ones?

  5. There must be a culinary use for finch eggs. But you first then let me know.
