Quite a lot of Nothing

Anytime you ask me what's happening, I will probably say "nothing much" or "not a lot" and one of the reasons for my infrequent posting these days is because I feel as though there is nothing much happening but what is something and what is nothing.
A root canal I had done a few years ago (not long enough to justify the expense) has failed. I have known for a while that it was not good but I didn't have any real problem with the tooth so there it stayed. A couple of weeks back, it got a bit painful so I saw the dentist who couldn't see any problems, even on x-ray so off i went, thinking I had made a lucky escape. When something is too good to be true, it usually is and so it is with the tooth. A few days after it was declared ok, the abcess popped up. The tooth will come out on Friday. It's disappointing that even in these days of good diets and good dental care I have to have it taken out but worse things have happened.

After not booking a single client last year I decided I had to close my doula business (pretty sure I reported that but just making sure you know where the story picks up) Almost as soon as I closed the website and decided to move on I started to take bookings, not a lot of bookings but enough. I have a client to support with her new baby and will visit her in her home about three times a week. The baby will most likely be born this weekend and I will start with them soon after they come home from hospital.
I will also be supporting a birth in the next few weeks. If all goes to plan, this will be my first VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean). In my mind, the technical details of the birth are irrelevant because I am there to offer support and support looks the same no matter what the circumstance but of course most people think that what they are going through is special enough to need experienced assistance so a VBAC might broaden my appeal to clients. The woman I will support loves a chat so if she thinks I do a good job she will tell everyone she meets (a double edged sword to be sure).
Tomorrow I will accompany her to one of her last appointments, the hospital is on the other side of Sydney and the drive at that time of day can be anywhere from 40-70 minutes so I may run late and curse traffic or I might relax with a coffee before the consultation. It's as unpredictable as birth itself.

Harry the very naughty hound seems to have been replaced by Harry the delightful doggo. Like every dog, he can be good medicine and he seems to have found his calling at the leash free dog park where he reminds people of another beloved black greyhound called Lola. We never met Lola but she left broken hearts when she died just a few weeks ago in a catastrophic collision with a park bench.

Well, that's my update. My nothing-is-happening life seems to have  a few things happening.

  1. I am so very glad that most of your things happening are positives. Sigh on the tooth front though.
Love that Harry is channelling Delightful Doggo at the moment, and am very glad that your doula business is picking up. Good luck, long may it continue.

    1. Thank you, EC. I'm curious to see what happens next, workwise, because this is all very unexpected!

  2. I'm delighted you have some new work. Isn't odd the way that happens, you close one door and then someone comes along and opens it again.

Sorry about the tooth. I had root canal work done recently, not fun but not painful I'm glad to say.

    1. Joey, it was a door I was reluctant to shut but i thought I had tried for long enough so yes, it was unexpected and I wonder why but you know, things happen when they do.
I'm glad you didnt have pain with the root canal, I never have either. A good dentist is worth their weight in gold

  4. Congratulations on the new work. It is funny how often that happens to people, quit something and suddenly you are in demand.
I agree, bummer about the tooth but in the overview it is far from the worst thing that could happen.

  5. my mother had me vaginally back in 1946. In 1947, fourteen months later, she had to have an emergency cesarean because of placenta previa. Then, she had my sister vaginally. The last two she had by cesarean. They gave her no choice with those last two. I hope all goes well and you have a happy client and healthy baby. It's amazing how you closed shop and were then in demand.

I had a root canal because of pain. However, the pain still remains, but the root canal was successful. The doctor never thought I was telling him the right tooth. But, the tooth he thought was the culprit has never caused anything else to happen. So, who knows why I had pain then or now. I hope yours is a back tooth. Mine shows when I smile, so I hope not to lose it.

    1. A placenta previa would have been terrifying in those days! Now, with ultrasound they know about it well ahead of time.

i wonder what causes your tooth pain, it's very strange. My tooth is a back one. My teeth are full of fillings so i expect I will probably lose more of them in the long term, it feels like everything is downhill from here. Oh well, there are worse things

  6. If you find your blogging ideas are drying up, please remember that you have a huge store of memories. You could just pick one off the shelf and turn it into a blogpost. I know you have done this before but there are many more tales left to tell.

    1. Yes, I'll have to search the memory banks for something.....

  7. Good to know your doula business has suddenly picked up again. Hopefully more requests will follow.

I have a root canal filling in a back tooth. The dentist warned me it might only last six months but it's now lasted for 9 years and hopefully it'll last another 9 years!

    1. I think after nine years you can safely assume your root canal is a success! Make sure to get it crowned before the tooth becomes brittle and falls apart (if you haven't already)

  8. How disappointing about the root canal not working out. Will your dentist adjust the price of the extraction? (One can hope!)

It's lovely that your business started back up when least expected, and that you were still available to answer the call.

    1. I see you are a comedian! I like my dentist and trust him but adjust the price of the extraction? not on your life!

It is nice to be back in business, I don't know how long it will last but it doesn't matter
