Common as muck

According to Mr John Gray, it's "common" to have a settee outdoors. Maybe it's not so common if you are in Australia rather than Wales? or maybe it's more common when you call the settee a couch or sofa?
Harry doesn't seem to mind being common, he has claimed the couch on the deck as his own. Of course Harry probably has an identity issue given that greyhound racing is the dirtiest, commonest sport around but greys are historically regarded as aristocratic and elegant. In some places they could only be owned by nobility.
I had a look for a list of characteristics that make a person "common" and it would seem that the qualifiers are as many as there are people:
  • large tattoos
  • drinking light beer
  • eating wonder bread
  • having a trampoline that covers more than half the backyard
  • outdoor settees
  • broken down cars on the street
  • swearing
  • teen pregnancy
  • baby bumps on display
  • fake tan
  • regional accents
  • eating in the street
  • arguing in public
I qualify on a few counts. It's a good thing Harry doesn't seem to notice.

  1. I too qualify, despite being lily white and never pregnant.

  2. Sofas, couches, or settees that are meant for indoor use are disgraceful anywhere outside the house. disgraceful or common, one on the back for the dog is fine...lol. In the US some people put them in the front yard. Those are the same people who share all the other qualities considered "common."

    1. Harry's couch might sometimes be sat on by people!

    2. I am glad he shares with people. Is it under cover where it cannot rain on it? Is it upholstered? Oh, I don't think some of those things are common at all.

    3. It is under cover, it gets some rain on it if there is a southerly blowing but it needs to be almost a hurricane before it's too wet. It is upholstered, it was a nice couch and we had it indoors until someone gave us another one.

    4. I don't think it counts as common.

  5. If it wasn't for tan-in-a-bottle I wouldn't have any! I only do it for a week or so in the spring, though; it gets tiresome after that.

If we lived in a place that had nicer weather all year around, I might put a couch out on the verandah. It would be a darn sight more comfortable on old bones than those plastic chairs! And I would sit there and drink light beer :)

    1. One week a year of fake tan doesn't count! I'll sit with ya

    1. I'm so infatuated with that darned dog. By the time I'm a grandmother I'll drive my friends away with "cute" anecdotes

  7. Interesting list. Don't forget going out in your pyjamas, having a stupid slogan on your t shirt, and wearing leggings.

An outside sofa wouldn't last very long in our rain-spattered climate!

    1. good additions to the list, Nick!
I see people in our local shops wearing pyjamas. I haven't sunk to that yet

  8. Seeing as I have no outdoor couch, sofa or settee nor hammock or decent chair even I can safely say I am not common unless of course you count the swearing as a fault--then call me sailor and ship me off to sea.

  9. I think we are all a little common. Does eating on the street include out door restaurants?

    1. Street restaurants have cutlery so that makes it all ok!

  10. Proud to say I am very common but my tongue is rather short when compared with Harry's enormous protuberance. Most impressive.

    1. It is clear that Harry doesn't suffer a tongue tie, that's for sure
