misconceptions

A very strange thing keeps happening to me. It happened again last night. I was out to dinner with a group of women who I know to say hello to but not much more.
The conversation turned to groceries and one lady started talking about how much she paid at the butcher's recently. She barely got the word meat out of her mouth before she stopped to address me directly "We don't eat a lot of meat but we do eat it"
I'm not an evangelistic vegetarian or even a vegetarian, I'm not a nutritionist or an animal rights campaigner and I don't have an anti-meat tattoo on my forehead so I don't know why people seem to want to justify their meat eating ways to me!
And how much is a lot of meat, anyway?

  1. May be you just look like an evangelical vegetarian, if such a look is possible!

  2. Just thought I'd drop by just to emphasise that I only eat chicken once a week!! I feel better for telling you that.

  3. I suspect the people who feel the need to justify themselves (particularly if you haven't articulated a problem) have some doubts. Which is sad.
My partner (I think from my vegetarian stance) eats a lot of meat. As far as he is concerned a meal needs meat and vegies are the garnish you put on the plate to make the meat look better.

    1. i find it really odd that people have to explain. If this particular lady thought I was judging her, i wouldn't know enough about her eating habits to even think of it.

My husband also thinks he hasn't eaten if there is no meat. He also thinks rice or noodles are mandatory but pasta is lazy.

  4. That IS very strange! Are you quite sure you don't have a tattoo on the back of you somewhere? . . .

To me, a lot of meat would be a steak the size of a plate or the equivalent every day. I eat the minimum I can get away with and still feel well. Beans and legumes don't agree with my digestive system very well so I can't eat enough of them to make up for the protein.

Oops. I think I just "'splained" to you too. Dang it!

    1. haha! explain away, it makes me feel at home!
beans and legumes are hard on tummies but luckily my tummy seems to cope with pretty much anything

  5. Perhaps you look like a vegetarian Kylie! Were you wearing pink cotton loon pants and a tie-dyed cheesecloth blouse with dreadlocks in your hair?

  6. I agree. Just because I don't eat meat doesn't mean meat-eaters have to fall over themselves justifying their behaviour. What other people eat is their own business, just as being vegetarian is my business.

    1. You must be the world's only vegetarian who doesn't try to induce guilt on the omnis!

  7. Well, most of the people I know are meat-eaters. I'd have my work cut out to lecture them all!

  8. I don't know why but I had you down as a vegetarian! Maybe it's because you look and sound so healthy. :D

I'm not a fan of a slab of meat on a plate, like a steak or something, but I do like minced beef with pasta etc.

  9. I don't know how I missed this post. It must have been the day I felt unwell and slept the whole day. I do unashamedly eat meat. However, since I am allergic to all mammal products, I mostly eat poultry and canned tuna or salmon. Maybe it is your vocation, an alternate lifestyle, that makes a person feel a need to explain to you.

    1. I knew you had allergies to lots of things but i hadn't quite realised it is mammal products. Mammalian meat allergy is becoming very common in some areas of Sydney, it is a complication of tick bite. Did you get it that way?
