A Hobbiton Engagement

My son Keaghan announced his engagement to the lovely Elizabeth this weekend and talk about the wedding (probably a couple of years away) has already started.
Which leads me to the question: do you have any interesting wedding memories to share?
(your own or someone else's)

  1. Within 30 seconds of leaving the church in our car, I regretted marrying him. Is that interesting enough? I never changed my mind, but it took me fourteen miserable years to divorce him.

    1. That's pretty interesting! Did you have misgivings before the wedding?

    2. Just a few, but he straightened up when I complained about his actions and never did the same thing again. Once we left the church, I knew it was a mistake.

      Congratulations to Keaghan and Elizabeth.

  3. Congratulations to Keaghan and Elizabeth.
I understand that I was present at my parent's wedding (unusual at the time). My mother said that the party was exceptional and that I had hiccups afterwards for days. She was still breast-feeding me at the time. Which with the benefit of later knowledge she was wrong to drink while feeding me, but I seem to have survived.

    1. At that time it would have been very unusual to have a child present at their parent's wedding. Is there a story there?
It's too late for your mum but for future reference i will say that these days we have understood that very very little alcohol passes through the milk and it is better have women drink and feed littles than complicate breastfeeding to the extent that they give up.

    2. My mother had been widowed five or six years earlier. She insisted that she wouldn't marry again for her children (three sons to her first marriage) but she wouldn't marry to spite them either. So they waited.
Thank you for the update about alcohol. I didn't know.

  4. Congratulations to your son and future DIL.
I was trying to thing of some wonderful or weird story about our wedding, but it was just a traditional wedding with no snafus. I guess we are just not very exciting people.

  5. That bridge is taking Keaghan and Elizabeth to another life. Will you be wearing a hat at the wedding? Best start looking now.

I am afraid I cannot think of any funny or strange wedding tales to tell you.

    1. Australians don't wear hats to weddings, only the races!

    2. "The races"? Do you mean the aboriginals and the Pacific islanders?

  6. How lovely! Congratulations to your son and his fiancee - may all go smoothly for them. (And for you :O) )

I always ask people I don't know, or don't know well, at weddings (when we are sitting trying to make conversation) if they have any stories about their own wedding or someone they know. The one we tell from our wedding took place during the reception meal afterward, where the wedding party table was set up on a stage area at one end of the hall. We had all stood for grace and unknown to me my new husband had pulled out my chair to make room for my dress. With grace over, I sat where I expected my chair to be -- and ended up on my backside on the floor. Being young and lithe, I bounced back up very quickly, so not everyone saw me down there, but it made for a good laugh afterward with those who did.

And another story: One of my cousins (one of four brothers) noticed his car was missing about two hours before his wedding. He was THIS CLOSE to calling the police when his brother showed up with the car, squeaky clean - he had decided on the spur of the moment to take it to the car wash as a surprise. Oh, it was a surprise all right :)

    1. Two great stories of generosity with unintended consequences!

  7. My husband's brother was talking about where he hid his car so his many cousins would not decorate it. I was not particularly interested in this conversation. But, later, the cousins were wondering where he hid the car. I knew, so I volunteered. Was the bil surprised and shocked I told. I think he went on his honeymoon and did not find out until we visited the next year. I did not find out until then that the suitcases stashed in the car were filled full of rice.
