Wedding Stories

When I started to think about it I have been to a few interesting weddings.
My  cousin, an impulsive and voluble man, full of joy about his impending marriage invited everyone he met in the lead up to the wedding so the finger food reception was grossly under catered, with most guests only manging to nab one or two morsels as the waiters scurried through the room.
Another wedding I attended was a pot-luck arrangement with guests asked to provide food but with the groom being from Sydney and the wedding in Brisbane 1000km away, many of the guests were from out of town and unable to bring too much. We were asked to allow the bridal table to eat first and after that  there was not much food left! The groom's dad was so embarrassed that he went out and bought KFC but we still left there hungry.

There was the time when my regular church congregation were attending our regular Sunday morning service which seemed to be running way ahead of the normal schedule and with little introduction a different minister went to the lectern, the wedding march started and a woman who we had never seen before started up the aisle.
The unfamiliar minister was a chaplain to the courts and the groom was due in court in the following week. He expected to be "put away" and had decided to be married beforehand.

And then there was a wedding where the bride favourably compared the groom to previous suitors.....

  1. Those sound like disasters. I suppose none of the weddings I have attended were interesting at all compared to your experiences.

  2. My stories yesterday were TAME compared to yours!! We actually haven't been to very many weddings so perhaps that reduces the possibilities :)

    1. I haven't been to many weddings either but there are no stories to tell with the perfect ones :)

  3. I'm sure there are as many wedding stories as weddings.

  4. Some interesting tales here.
I can remember a wedding where the bride and groom weren't on speaking terms. She was pregnant and both families were pressuring them to 'do the right thing'. It didn't last, but I am glad to say that both have since found happiness.

    1. Thankfully the pressures around unexpected pregnancies are slowly dying.
A few years ago I met a couple in their late 30's who were newly together. They had been teen sweethearts and when she had become pregnant they were never allowed to speak to each other. She had raised their son alone and all three of them had missed out on the family they wanted for 20 years

    2. That is heartbreaking. I am so glad that they found each other again, and resent (on their behalf) the years they were separated.

    3. How sad, Kylie. Wasted time, and for what? Gah.

    4. I cried my eyes out when I heard the story. If they had stayed together it might not have worked but now they will always think of it as a lost 20 years

  5. I came back to say how much I love the picture of the cake :)

  6. I have been to a number of weddings in my time and cannot think of any that stood out for anything extraordinary. Without exception, including my own, they were all singularly focussed on getting the function over to get on with the food and celebrations.

  7. I vividly remember a wedding reception on HMS Belfast in London. The food tasted great at the time, but both Jenny and I had violent food poisoning when we got home. I've no idea if anyone was bold enough to inform the bride and groom that the food was tainted. Mind you, they must have suffered the after-effects as well.
