Fire Update

I want to thank everyone for their good wishes. The fire situation won't directly effect us but the fire is still out of control. There are helicopters constantly water bombing the fire perimeter and when I was in the general area today there were plenty of fire trucks to be seen.
My sister has returned to her home but there is still a warning for people in the area to have bags packed.

Smoke is making spectacular sunsets, smelly washing and breathing difficulties for many right across the city.

I mentioned that my son was twice evacuated from the supermarket where he works and in a further blow to the grocery giant, every Woolworths in the country had to be closed this afternoon due to a system failure.
Workers and managers at the fire effected branches will have a nightmare of stock and administration to deal with when all of this is over. If it doesn't rain, it pours!

  1. We place such reliance on computer systems these days. In that sense, it is ludicrous that Woolworths have had to shut down all their stores. By now, your local firefighters must be utterly exhausted and deserving of enormous praise.

    1. having every store in the nation connected to the same system would seem to be an obvious design flaw.

I don't know how many firefighters have been working over the last 48 hours but I am sure they have all gone beyond the call of duty (many are volunteers to start with)
I hope they can catch a break soon

  2. The smoke would cause me such problems! As for your sister, I would keep the car packed and try to get all the things I love in the car. I never heard of a nationwide system failure in a chain. It sounds serious.

    1. The smoke is irritating my usually bullet proof system, my niece, daughter and parents have all had some wheezing and problems. There is not much being said about it but emergency departments are probably quite stressed with respiratory patients.

The system failure was about an hour long and late afternoon so a lot of post-work shoppers are probably wondering what to do about dinner! I can see their share price taking a hit

  3. I am glad that you and your sister are safe. The WAN systems always have back ups and they should be able to get back to normal in a short time unless the backup area also gets destroyed by fire.

    1. I think the shops were only closed for an hour so yes, it was a quick recovery, I was amazed that so many stores could be affected.

  4. The fires seem to go on and on. Somehow weather also has to help. Keep safe.

    1. the summer seems to be going on and on so fire season remains with us. We should be well into autumn by now but I haven't even considered a long sleeve yet

    1. there has been no rain yet and it would have been nice for clearing the air but i think most of the smoke has blown away by now

  6. I've been following it in the UK press. It is certainly horrendous even if it is felt to be under control. Computer systems are, of course, essential but so is robustness and good back-up systems.

    1. It was all ok in the end but it took a few days. The computer glitch was amazing, I'm sure it will be fixed quick smart but it seems ridiculous to have a system which can close every store

  7. I have been watching the reports on the fires. And thanking the firefighters. Hopefully Woolies will learn from this glitch. And I suspect they will - loss of income is a teacher that big business respects.

  9. So Woolies sell groceries?

Glad you are safe but I will continue to pray for all those who are not.

    1. Woolies only do groceries these days. There was a time when it was a "variety store" but that must have changed about 20 years ago
