Tom the Butcher

On New Years Eve, I was home alone and wanting to do something different so I dyed my hair pink. A couple of days later I was at the butchers and the butcher said to me "You're looking *teeny pause* very original today" In the same moment that I smiled and said "Thanks!" I realised it maybe wasn't meant entirely as a compliment.

"Will it last all year?"

I assured him I am much too lazy for it to last much more than a week.

I handed him his money and as he gave me change, he clasped my hand with both of his and wished me a Happy New Year.

And for just that brief moment I felt oddly cherished by an almost stranger.

The photo is over a year old and my haircut is different now but this is the colour.

    2. I meant buy more often. You can buy just a bit each time.

  2. We need a picture of your pink hair. The other day, I told Tommy I wanted to color my hair pink.

  3. I think you look great in the pink! Very subtle. I do a pink rinse every now and then - I always get compliments.

  6. Maybe he was looking for a ‘long term’ relationship (a year at least)

  7. I thought I would never have dyed my hair... except my dark brown hair started going grey only in streaks. So during the years while my hair was going fully grey, I too dyed my hair regularly. Now it is 100% grey, so I add nothing 👋

    1. I dyed my greying hair for 10 years but I never did a great job.it looked much better when I just let it go salt and pepper

    1. The pause was considering what to say.
The pink colour won't last but he was asking if it would

  10. Well I certainly won't be dying my hair pink - or any other colours for that matter. For all there is of it probably no one would notice anyway.

    1. You don't strike me as the kind of man to have coloured hair!

  11. How about a much darker pink? But who am I to say. It's not my hair and besides I'm just a big mouth.

    1. My hair doesn't absorb the colour well so it's challenging to get it darker and I don't want to pay a hairdresser but I reallky like your thinking!
Not a big mouth, Red. Far from it

  12. "Very original", that's a nice ambiguous phrase, isn't it? And yes, it's nice to feel cherished by a total stranger.

Immigration is still an important issue today.
