Quilts at the Cathedral

Part of the Griffith Spring Festival was a quilt display by the Murrimbidgee Country Quilters. It was nice to visit this lovely old church and appreciate the handiwork. It was a hot afternoon but the church was cool and still. I had a chat with some of the artists, too.

The day after, I met a lady who had been part of the congregation of this church and left in the 70s because of the child sexual abuse that was happening there at the time.

On the day I visited, the cathedral was a sanctuary but for some it has been the exact opposite. I really hope that the efforts made to prevent child abuse do their job and save a lot of suffering for coming generations.

  1. There are some very nice works of art on display.
It would be nice to be able to say, at least the child abuse is history, but I fear it isn't.

    1. There will always be predators, Andrew. All we can do is try to stop their access to kids.

  2. Beautiful quilts especially on the seats.
Awful part of it's history with child abuse.

  3. Sadly not over by a long shot, Kylie. But I love the quilts and how they are displayed. I love to see women's work far more honoured now than it was in our mothers' times.

    1. Child abuse will never be over but I hope changes in culture can make it a lot less.
Womens art and technical competence deserves to be recognised. Its as valuable as any man's sculpture/ building/ painting

  4. A wonderful selection of quilts. A shame about the lady who had to leave the church because of child sex abuse.

    1. The lady herself was unaffected but left in protest.
The quilts are wonderful but then textiles are my one great love

  5. Beautiful quilts. I was reading about a group of folks here locally who make quilts all year. In the fall they have a blessing of the quilts before donating them to a local women's shelter.
