Easter will forever be imprinted in my mind as the time when Dad suddenly became entirely different to his usual self. Looking back there had been more of a slow decline than I had realised but it was almost Easter when he raised a walking stick threatening to hit someone and it was Easter when he stopped answering calls and text messages. I was remembering all of this yesterday and had a wee cry. The first in many months.
This morning, Mum called at 6am to tell me her call bell wasn't working and despite my tiredness I didn't go back to sleep, instead I pottered then went to church and drove somebody home.
Given that it is Good Friday, church was solemn. In addition I am sore with a nagging back issue and maybe the grief glitter is being blown around at the moment.
With this mild irritability as my background state today, I was mighty surprised to find my self singing a children's song I must have learnt 45 years ago:
I am a promise, I am a possibility,
I am a promise, with a capital P
I am a great big bundle of po-ten-ti-al-ity-y
.......
I am a promise to be anything God wants me to be.
The song is completely incongruent with the day and honestly, with the trajectory of my life.
The happy little children's song was soon pushed aside when I arrived to find Mum had been given an "analogue" bell, the type you might see on a shop counter, and was hitting it madly:
ding ding ding
ding ding ding
ding ding ding ding ding ding ding
God Bless the carers.
On that long ago execution friday, nobody knew what would happen on Sunday and today I am reminded that nothing is over until it's over.
It is funny how something triggers a memory that really doesn't need to be remembered, but it can be nice.
ReplyDeleteNot sure where it came from, Andrew but that's ok
DeleteMemories come flooding back on anniversaries.
ReplyDeleteSome memories linger just barely out of mind so they are ready to pounce
DeleteIndeed, memories sad and happy come back on anniversaries. I hope your back problem can be eased somehow. Back pain is no joke.
ReplyDeleteWe are working on the back. It's improving but it will take time
DeleteFunny how that is Kylie. Something unrelated. I am shocked as to what memories can surface on me, sometimes way too early in the morning and I go vividly back to when I was eight years old and stole every single toy truck from a neighbourhood boy and brought them all home and said I had found them. They were gorgeous trucks. I wanted trucks not dollies. The boy saw me and reported me to his parents who came storming over. Not a pretty scene either before or after. I still miss those lovely trucks.

Trucks are more useful than dollies and they don't need clothes.
DeleteI'm not surprised it caused a drama and not at all surprised you miss them
It's funny how old songs from long ago will sometimes rise to the surface of your mind, The other day I kept "hearing" "Pictures of Lily" by The Who.
ReplyDeleteI dont think i know it but I will look it up.
DeleteWhy do things pop up when least expected?
ReplyDelete"I Am A Promise" is by the Gaithers, Bill and Gloria. Bill just turned 90 in March and Gloria is somewhere in her 80s now. Both of them are still going strong. They are the folks who wrote "He Touched Me" and "Because He Lives" and "The King Is Coming" and many, many others. The part of the song you left out and put "......." goes "And if you'll listen / You'll hear God's voice / And if you're trying / He'll help you make the right choices". Those words seem to me to be helpful for anyone of any age, whatever their circumstances, and totally congruent with whatever life throws at us. God bless you, kylie, and a very happy Easter.
"Because He Lives" is a huge favourite of mine. Just beautiful.
DeleteI believe I have mostly made the right choices but my potentiality has never quite made it to capital letter stuff.
Be blessed my friend, He is Risen
Wow, that’s a cool looking ride.
ReplyDeleteEaster is a good time for reflection, but no time is ever good for back pain. Everything just seems so much harder when your back is sore, I hope you are on the mend soon. Megan
It's such a cool old car, obviously loved.
DeleteHappy Easter and thank you, Megan
Beautifully written. Astonishing, really.
ReplyDeleteNothing is over until it's over as you said.
The Lord stands at the dawn of Western Civilisation and will be there at the end.
And serious scientists like Avi Loeb at Harvard are talking seriously about UFOs and aliens.
Return of the supernatural ? Or is the natural supernatural ?
The natural is supernatural. And there are no coincidences with Christ.
DeleteThank you, Haggerty. Happy Easter to you
I recall my daughter telling of a shop counter call bell dinging madly for quite some time as too many customers grew impatient waiting for "Deli" service at the cold meats and cheeses section of a supermarket. The three girls working were unable to keep up apparently. Daughter walked out from the back where she had been putting chickens in the giant rotisserie and ripped the bell off the counter and stuffed it in her pocket.
ReplyDeleteI love that! What point is dinging madly when everyone is doing their best
