The cold I was developing on Thursday became fully fledged on the weekend. My eyes and nose streamed and I cancelled all plans.
Yesterday I felt a wee bit better and went to work, mostly because there was an admission to do. The boss asked if I was sick and made an issue of me spreading germs. I said I only came in to do the admission "get it done and then go home"
Maybe I take things to personally but I didnt like being the bad guy. The fact that they told me to do the admission then go pretty much says everything.
It's an odd thing, one minute I can feel quite good and the next my energy tanks.
I am home today. I had a chiro treatment and went out for coffee and now Buffy is sleeping on my lap.
A dear friend lost her mum last week and I want to go to the funeral on Friday. It's a 4.5 hour drive and I would normally do it with one arm tied behind me but I am nervous about doing too much too soon. I didn't think I was exhausted before I got sick but it's here now and some moments feels almost insurmountable.
While I have been taking it easy I read "The Unlikely Doctor": Timote Timoke tells his remarkable story about a childhood of disadvatage and violence, leading to gang life and gaol. The memory of the aroha he received from his grandparents sustains him until he can become a paramedic and eventually a doctor.
To say the book is inspirational would be trite so I won't. I will say it's a great example of how genuine love is never wasted.
I guess a 4.5 hour round trip, and I think that is above most people's expectations from friends. I would not.
ReplyDeleteHaving a cold when working has become difficult now. No one wants close contact with someone sniffling away and dabbing at their dripping nose, let alone fellow workers. Bosses used to want staff to come to work when they were half dead, but this has changed, and I think for the better. Sounder to have one staff member away sick than a succession of staff away over an extended period.
It's 4.5 one way, Andrew. I thought I could make it a quick trip to see a town I haven't been to. We will see.
DeleteI know sickness at work is frowned upon, especially in aged care, so there needs to be a plan in place to make sure every role is covered.
If I'd had a heavy cold I don't think I'd hazard a 4½ hour road trip. I'd be content to mull over the memories of my friend.
ReplyDeleteI wont do anything stupid
DeleteThat's a tough one Kylie but 9 hours return is a huge amount of driving when one is under the weather and do think of safety too. We are not good drivers coughing and wheezing and exhausted.
ReplyDeleteI hope you get better soon.

If I go at all, I'll take a couple of nights. Safety is my biggest concern.
DeleteIf you want to go to the funeral on Friday via a 4.5 hour drive and you would hate to miss a dear friend's mum's funeral, share a big car with three friends and sleep in the back seat. If more than 4 people are going from your area, hire a mini bus.
ReplyDeleteI missed my son's funeral which was overseas, and I will never forget that day :(
and wear a face mask.
DeleteCar sharing is a good idea!
DeleteI'm so sorry you were unable to farewell your son in that way. These rituals are so very important.
With all the problems I'm assuming you haven't been able to visit the grave?
I hope you recuperate rapidly.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Red. I am much better
DeleteSorry to hear you were unwell and hope you are soon 100% again.
ReplyDeleteThanks, River
DeleteI hope you are feeling better? My remedy for bad colds is to do absolutely nothing for two weeks - honestly, it won't drag on if you stick to my plan.

It's a wonderful plan!
DeleteSelf-care is everything right now, Kylie.
ReplyDeleteAs a mother and worker it would have been foolish to go to the funeral.
A five hour drive is out of the question. No one should have to drive in your state.
Reading Dr Te Moke's book in the safety of your home was the wiser decision.
I get chest infections if I stay too long in crowded places. My only health concern. For now.
I told my doctor it's caused by droplets hanging in the air. He looked at me with a sceptical grin.
I've little faith in our General Practitioners. But he gives me antibiotics so I don't disagree with him.
Dr Te Moke's book is about hope as well as many other moral & social issues.
Hope was the last thing in Pandora's Box. She slammed the lid shut before Hope fled.
Wild fires are erupting in the Cairngorms in the north of Scotland as I write.
Fires in the National Park in Glenmore. It may still be blazing as I write these words.
The Cairngorms are made of granite plutons as well as quartz, topaz and green beryl.
Four hundred and fifteen million years old !
Wild fires in the UK! Will we never learn?
DeleteOf course you get sick from droplets...or grotty door handles or both.
After a few days of recovery I did go to the funeral. I was well but everything that could go wrong did go wrong. It was a terrible trip.

DeleteAlways (or at least often) the last to the party, I was going to hope you made a speedy recovery and wonder whether you made the trip, but I see by your initial reply to the preceding comment that you did and you did. I'm glad you were able to go but sorry for all the things that went wrong.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Robert. Sometimes things just aren't the way we hope but I'm back safe and that's what counts.
DeleteI meant to add that ahora was a new word to me so I had to look it up. Still learning new things at 85.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you looked it up!
