In The Lunchroom

Today at work we had a birthday morning tea. Usually the manufacturing team (that's me) eat at 10.30am and admin at some later time but for birthdays we combine.

The manufacturing team is made up of Mr QC, Production manager (my hubby), me (kylie) and cool young guy (who, incidentally, has the same nose as our very own Peter)
Cool young guy always has his very neat nose in a book, hubby has his nose in a newspaper (the drive section first, anything else if he's desperate) Mr QC eats a whole lot of fruit and I often have porridge. I often have a bit of a conversation with Mr QC and sometimes manage to drag CYG (cool young guy) into it but for the most part it is very, very quiet.

Today, however, we had all the admin folk as well and they are rather more chatty. We asked CYG if he has a girlfriend (no), someone asked Mr QC (a divorcee) if he would marry again, ("I'll tell you when it happens") and does his son have a girl? (a couple, his Dad thinks), Mrs Secretary described the driving habits of her mother-in-law, we chatted about the best places to buy sausage rolls and meat pies and whinged briefly about the dismal state of the weather. Armani (a chemist) usually manages to mention sex at least once but I think he failed today.

And on it goes.....

Mr QC later asked me why the married people want to condemn everyone to their own miserable fate, I told him that I'm a diehard romantic and to wash his mouth out, we decided that CYG has plenty of time to get involved with women, then went on to talk about the origins of Black Friday (it's coming up). That led to the Crusades and religion, most specifically the difference between the Orthdox churches and Catholicism.

How's that for a list? religion, sexual politics, food and the weather, nosy questions and undying cynicism.

What's your lunchtime chat?

  1. Hey Special,

Wow, it seems like your lunchtime chats are really interesting! Can I come? Unfortunately, the nature of my job and the constant travelling means I don't get to eat lunch with anyone usually. I either manage to get home for a quick bite, stay at the office or go to a cafe near Red Sqaure. The office is terrible because the Russian teachers there (99% women) speak Russian very loudly and they always hog the photocopier. The cafe is my favourite, but I only get to go there twice a week if I'm lucky. I sit, order some fruit tea and have pancakes - it's delicious, and I usually read my book while I'm there - it's very relaxing :-)

  3. Kylie, your lunchtime chatter sounds positively invigorating...and Peter, the cafe lunch appeals to me as well. My lunchtime today consisted of tuna salad and cucumber slices eaten on Ritz crackers, standing at the kitchen counter in between chores...oh, and I was reading a cookbook, dropping cracker crumbs all over it. No conversation to speak of, except the conversation that's always rumbling around in my head...

  4. At the Salon, lunch is on the run, sometimes we get to chat in bewtween clients. The conversation runs from food, booze, men, politics, sex...not always in that order. With at least 5 to 6 of us there it can be interesting. Oh, yea, our lunch time can be non ending depending on schedule.

If I am home by myself, lunch is like Leah's. I too have conversation rumblings in my head, and always have a cookbook close by.
    This was fun Kylie.

a never ending lunch time might become a bit boring, does it?

and yes, i also have a stream of chatter inside my head. i find it hard to imagine that men have "nothing" in there but they tell me it's true

  7. Well that was very stimulating kind of conversation. My lunch time is spent supervising children! I also come home from an after school club really tired, so usually crash out & don't want to talk for a good while!!!!! Boring, aren't I?

  9. What interesting luncbreaks. In my office we usually go to the amenities room to chat and read the newspapers. Conversation revolves mostly around the footy or the cricket. Some of us go for a 4km walk around 'the tan' at the Botanical Gardens every Wednesday.

  13. Kylie,
"the tan" is a dirt track, that is 3.896kms long to be precise, that encircles the Botanical Gardens. The track is mostly surfaced in a sandy gravel now but long ago was covered in tan bark and was used as a bridle path by Victorian mounted police to exercise their horses. These days corporate Melbourne uses it for team competition in running and walking.
    have terrific weekend.

Hi peter, leah, gig, maggie may, and suburbia. Now I'm going back to the footy on the tv. The Bombers are winning at half-time :)!

  14. we usually talk about microbiology. We discuss susceptibility patterns, interesting molds, ect. Oh and we occasionally gossip about other departments. But I wouldn't call our lunch conversations boring. Just nerdy. What can I say, I'm a science geek and I love it.

  15. Kylie,
A never ending lunch is not always boring, means sometimes you might be by yourself,or there could be 1,2,3 or more of us eating at one time. Sometimes you might miss part of the converstion, therefore you don't get the whole story...everyday is different.
Thanks for all the good thoughts!!
    love ya

  16. Great post, great comments! Hi everyone :).

You don't even want to know about my lunch, but I'll tell you. I get up early, feed all the kitties, the dog, the fish, start some laundry, feed the squirrels and birds and two kitties who come to our yard, clean up the mess any kitties have made, water some of the garden if necessary, try to find time for a shower, but usually don't, so just put my hair in a pony tail and throw on a hat, pack the bag for the ferals at the park, eat something while standing up, rush to the park, feed the ferals, get done, rush back to Carmichael, do a slew of errands, get home, unpack while feeding the fish, the kitties (they insist on having another can of food for brunch!), give T-Bone a snack and take him out for a pee, clean the kitchen, load the dishwasher with all the "stuff" for the park, turn it on, do laundry, water the garden, and every time I pass the refrigerator I shove some unknown object in my mouth. I don't even think I look or think anymore. Oh, and I do way more than that, but I don't want to bore you!!!

God, just writing that was exhausting! Oh, that's why I'm not supposed to be here and why I'm supposed to be simplifying. Hummmmmmmm, Dr. P. may have a point.

Kylie, I'd give anything for your lunch hour and that sort of relaxation. But, as my darling sister said about her busy, hectic life, "This is the life I chose."

    Love you sweetie,
    XO Suze
