I'm hoping to take the kids to the open day at the cemetery tomorrow. This particular cemetery is near the beach I like to take them to and we have often gone for a little wander among the headstones or the crypts after a morning swimming. They are fascinated, as I am, with the stories behind the stones, the stories we will of course, never know.

I always leave thinking about how little our gravestones say about us. When we were born and when we died place us on a timeline but they don't say anything about who we were.

Mother of...... , wife of........ , daughter of....... list the people we loved and who loved us and that is important but it still doesn't say who we really were. If I'm nobody's wife, nobody's mother, does that make me nobody? I think not.

Gravestones are neccessarily abbreviated representations of a life but why couldn't we, say, list a persons five best qualities or even list them as a cantankerous old eccentric ?

What do you think a gravestone should say?

And what might yours say?

  1. I'm leaning towards a video headstone. Pre-record my message and wait. It will be green too because the model I'm interested in is solar powered.

  2. My son's headstone has a picture of him etched in, a poem (about a butterfly with a broken wing -- couldn't fly so he learned to sing), a Bible verse (Is. 40:31), and all the usual beloveds. You'd be amazed what an outreach a headstone can be, expecially for those with children facing death. I'd be happy if my headstone merely said: She was loved LOTS!

  3. I like looking at old cemeteries, especially those from the 1800's or older. As you said, I'm curious to know who those people were.

I do not want to be buried, so there will be no headstone. I'd rather just do something meaningful while I'm alive that people will remember.

And no, it's not my blog.

  4. A gravestone should give a short history of whomever lies beneath.

    My gravestone would read:

"Here rests Mark, husband of Jo"

    "A real worry wart
    All his worry
    was for nought"

  12. OMG Kylie!!
Me and my dad and brothers used to take a packed lunch and ride our bikes to visit the old headstones at the cemetary - wow, great families think alike!!!

I used to find them fascinating too, probly still do! I know it's kinda morbid, but that's what kind of a person i am, but i used to find the little kids headstones most fascinatingly sad. Like something out of the 1800's or something!

Mine would probly run along the lines of
single, crazy, pshyco, immature little turd.
Kicked the bucket without completing the one, measly little bullet point on her Bucket List!
