Mugs

I have a pottery jug which became very popular for drinking from because it is so much bigger than a regular mug and it has a beautiful tactile quality. It looks a lot like this one I found via google
Unfortunately, as always happens to the popular items, it got broken. The handle was broken into half a dozen pieces. I still have what remains of the jug but it isn't really comfortable or safe any more.

Last week I was in the shops and I was drawn to a collection of hand made mugs, they looked especially good clustered on the table because the little irregularities are more obvious in a group. I thought they were lovely but they were quite expensive and who ever displays their mugs in a pretty group for decorative effect?

I was about to move on when I spotted the worthy replacement to my broken jug-as-drinkware. The mugs were in a set of four, enough for all the hot chocolate lovers to indulge at once. They had a warm matte finish and the design was rounded in a very holdable shape. They would be a nice surprise to take home and perfectly timed as winter starts to take hold. My good taste was confirmed by the fact there was one lonely box on the shelf, all the rest were gone. I got a nasty paper cut on the torn packaging but I wouldn't be dissuaded, there I stood in the queue, bleeding and cursing (quietly of course) while people asked for complicated refunds. I waited and waited. I would have left in disgust but for the prize I was going to take home. I looked forward to hot chocolates in the perfect mug, sitting by the heater and munching on shortbread.
I finally reached the register, money in hand, itching to get home to the hot chocolate but my luck had run out, my dreams were shattered, the product was recalled!

  1. Some years ago a dear friend, alas no more sent me a parcel for my birthday. On opening it I found two lovely beer mugs and a card that said "Mugs for a mug from a mug."

  2. We have a wonderful selection of mugs, going back decades. I still have two matching mugs I bought soon after meeting Jenny! They seem to be indestructible. Jenny loves Denby mugs and we have several of those. But once a mug has the slightest chip, Jenny won't countenance using it any more, and out it goes.

    1. I am always on a mission to beat clutter so chipped mugs are on my destroy list but I rarely get away with it, they always seem to be somebody's sentimental favourite!

  3. The four mugs have a great matt finish to them. What a pity you had to queue for them with them being recalled.

  4. Better to find they had been recalled at the register than to read later that you had been consuming toxins or glaze shards. They were cool looking mugs though!

    1. I was very curious about the reason for the recall but the shop assistant didn't know

  5. I've not heard of a mug being recalled before. I do like the form and glaze though.

    1. It's is hard to imagine why they could be recalled. There was a polka dotted version still on the shelf, presumably for sale, but I didnt like the spots

  6. What a pity. I hope you find a suitable replacement soon.
I had a pottery mug which I used exclusively for over twenty years. It just felt 'right'. I wept the day I broke it, and have not yet found a replacement which is a fraction as good.

    1. Twenty years is a long life for a mug, you did well! It makes the loss more upsetting though

  7. I like your broken drinking mug. I saw some almost identical to that one that a local potter had made. Why did they leave the mugs on the shelf if they had been recalled? I would hate to have an item in my hand and have it taken from me! And, you got a paper to boot!

    1. The store I was in is a very large and well known department store but this particular one is quite shabby (i keep expecting it to close) so i think their stock control is equally patchy. I was quite disappointed about it but it's all good, they are just mugs after all
