My MP surely gets sick of me!

David,
You have been elected by the people of Banks to represent us and I want you to be aware that in the matter of the men now stranded on Manus Island, I ask you to please, represent us differently!
Australians are people of compassion and humanity. We are the people of the "fair go" and mateship but in the case of Manus Island, if we treated animals this way we would be on abuse charges.
The human rights abuses we are committing are so many and so sustained that we will never be able to explain it all away as a mistake or a lack of understanding. This is deliberate and dark behaviour and it will stain our collective conscience for generations to come.
I do not want any more deaths on Manus but it would seem that it is only a matter of time before that is what will happen. I don't want to see people denied water, medical aid or dignity in my name and I don't believe that any worthy Australian want these things.
I thank you for your service to the people of Banks and believe in your intentions to contribute in a meaningful way, now lets just broaden the perspective a little and be great global citizens.

  1. I have been writing similar letters myself. I am totally ashamed of what we have done to these people. And hoping for better. Much better.

    1. I don't follow politics most of the time so if I am noticing that Malcolm Turnbull is the most piss weak PM in my memory, it's gotta be bad

  2. I think every country gets embarrassed by the actions of their politicians. I certainly do with Theresa May.

    1. Thanks Red. I used to craft these kinds of things much more carefully but these days i think it is less about a compelling argument than about volume of correspondence

    1. I have understood that your views on refugees may be different to mine and that is ok. India is very different to Australia, you are close to trouble spots and can be reached by foot. The demands on you are much different.

  5. Dear Kylie,
Before I became an elected politician I had some ideals and cared about matters like those to which you have referred in your letter. However, now I am an elected politician I am only bothered about my career and how I appear in the media. Please don't bother me with stuff like this again.
    Yours truly,
    David

  7. Well said. "This is deliberate and dark behaviour" sums up a lot of what our own British government is doing. Their unbelievably cruel and sadistic treatment of welfare claimants, the disabled and the jobless is utterly shocking but clearly sanctioned at the highest level.

    1. The privileged few think that every one should be like them and failing that, they should be punished. i don't know where or how long it will be but there will be a revolution
