Dead of Winter

The movie I saw on Saturday was "Dead of Winter." It was beautifully done: a gripping story, dramatic scenery, some romance and a score which enhanced the action. Emma Thompson was understated and brilliant. I enjoyed it and at the same time my feelings were summed up by another cinema go-er who remarked to nobody in particular "Well that was bleak, wasn't it?"

My trip to see my mountain family was lovely and I was almost home when somebody at traffic lights rolled down the window to tell me I had a flat tyre. It was very flat. Pancake flat. To call the NRMA and wait an hour or try to limp home on it? No, I wasn't going to drive it further, that would be dumb. On the off chance I called Keaghan who happened to be out and about. He arrived within 15 minutes, changed the wheel and got me back on the road without drama. When I pulled the spare out, the wheel well had a puddle of water in it. Obviously something is leaking. I'm not sure I have the heart to try to deal with that right now. I might just towel it out and hope for dry weather.
Today I will go and get the tyre fixed. I'll get my annual roadworthy inspection at the same time, making two boring chores into one.

The craft workshop I went to was an interesting little interlude. We were making Christmas Wreaths with upcycled materials. One rather loud participant looked at my completed wreath and said "When you were doing that I thought it was going to be awful but it's actually nice" hahahaha I can translate fake talk for "I hate that" why did she need to make any comment on a strangers craft? especially after grabbing all the matching colours for herself.

I had a nice time and will keep an eye on what other workshops come up. I leave you with my quirky little wreath. Looking at it gives me an odd joy.

  1. I looked at the trailer for Dead of Winter. It looks like something I would like to see. Maybe TheHub and I can put it on our Christmas time to-do list.
I am glad you had a good time crafting and making your wreath. I do what I do and really don't give a flip what anyone else thinks of it, but a remark like the lady made might sting for a second. Enjoy yours! It's cute!

    1. I might have been bothered once but these days I just wonder what makes a person think i need their opinion.
Do put Dead of Winter on your list, if not for the cinema, for streaming.
      Thanks Anne

  2. Did you use emu feathers to make your wreath? And why didn't you tell that woman to go **** herself? "Dead of Winter" was on at my favoured cinema recently and I thought about going to see it but now I really wish I had. I am a big fan of bleakness.

    1. I couldnt tell her to go jump because she was "complimenting" me.
I'm not a fan of bleakness but it was still good. You might catch it on netflix

  3. I am not sure you are right about the opinion on the wreath. I recall saying similar about things and being genuinely surprised at the result, and saying so. "I wasn't sure where you were going with that, but it's terrific". If it was a fail, I would say nothing.

    1. That's a fair comment. I may have misinterpreted.

  4. I like Emma Thompson, she's usually good in everything she does - I'm not doing bleak at the moment, but I will look out for Dead of Winter another time.
As for the almost backhanded compliment - just take it as a compliment and put the woman out of your head!

  5. You sorted out the flat tyre very quickly. I had a flat tyre a few months ago and it was quite a palaver replacing it because this car (Renault Clio) doesn't have a spare tyre. I haven't come across Dead of Winter, it sounds worth watching. Yes, you could do without a stranger making a barbed remark about your wreath.

    1. I had to replace the tyre in the end.
What do you do with no spare? Not even one of those skinny ones?

    2. That's the first time I've had a tyre problem in 11 years. Hopefully the new tyre will see the car out and won't need replacing again. Presumably the lack of a spare tyre was a cost-cutting measure. A very stupid one.

  6. I love your wreath, very creative Kylie. I've never learned to change a tire, more fool me. Have had to wait on highways for kind strangers and they always show up. Love the original spelling of tyre. Never got quite used to the Canadian version of some spellings (but not as extreme as the dropping of u's in the US)

    1. Changing a tyre is an easy series of steps but i no longer have the balance. Kind strangers are easier anyway!
I insist on English spellings for everything, its a wee protest 😊
