I've been watching the situation with Christa Pike, not deep diving into it but keeping an eye on headlines. The poor woman is back in prison while they figure out next steps. I think she has suffered enough. I know she did a heinous thing. I also know she was young when she did it. I also know she had suffered horribly as a child. She has expressed remorse and as they say, an eye for an eye makes the world go blind. Christa has endured 30+ years on death row, survived two doses of lethal injection and recovered from the resulting coma. That is enough for a traumatised child.
Sam Wood is afraid of gaol style punishment for the (alleged) attempted murder of his wife in the presence of her daughter and the couple's three under 10 children. He can dish it out but he's apparently not so great at taking it. I am unsure of how I stand on retributive justice but if he happened to slip on some soap
and hit his head
and the cameras were faulty
and the guards were asleep
and the phones didn't work
and the ambulance was caught in traffic.....
I would not shed a tear.
I agree with you regarding Christa. As for Sam Wood - I think I agree with you there as well!

He has lost all his sponsorships. Hopefully now he remains in gaol where he's too far for anybody to visit.
DeleteYou are quite right about Pike, and surely no one could argue she is getting off scot free. I think she has endured enough.

Pike has more than paid her dues.
DeleteI haven't paid much attention to the Christa Pike story, so didn't know she had already waited on Death Row for 30 years. I'd say that's enough punishment.

ReplyDeleteI'm hoping that because Sam Wood is a high profile influencer and his actions were so very egregious there might be a change in the way domestic and family violence is treated. We have a lot of sportsmen who get away with sexual assualt but maybe strangulation will be the tipping point.
DeleteThe Pike situation is barbaric. Then I believe capital punishment reduces us all to barbarism. And I can see it progressing in the US where they have authorized a public execution. I don't know anything about the Sam Wood case.

Oh yes, I knew there was another case i had in mind. Livestreaming is even more barbaric. It's all about desensitising the public so the administration can get away with increasing horrors.
DeleteSam Wood is an Australian "good guy fitness influencer" whose 21yo step daughter had to call police as he strangled her mother. So essentially a garden variety abuser with a big profile.
