Activity Apron

My inspiration for blogging tends to wax and wane, sometimes I think that any small thought or happening would make a good post and other times I can't think of a thing to say.

This week a little inspiration came when I was asked if I could maybe create an activity apron for a lady with Alzheimers. Apparently the lady involved likes to wander through the rooms of her nursing home and fidget with everyone's property and the chaplain thought an activity apron might be a good distraction for her.

I pulled out an old apron and took the frilled bib off it, added a zip for therapeutic zip pulling, some velcro for a satisfying ripping noise to drive other residents nuts, a string of beads, a small plush toy, a tassle for plaiting and a piece of nylon cord for threading through buttonholes.

I was pleased to create something that was completely upcycled, everything I put on there was salvaged from around the house.

The plan was to take a photo but I was so keen to hand it over today that I forgot the picture. Oh well. Google images will give you the idea.

  1. How clever and what a great service project for the most forgotten!

    1. I saw them selling for $70 on Etsy and wondered if I could sell a few but when you put it that way, it would seem almost exploitative to even think of it!

  2. That is a great idea, and I'm sure it will be well used!

Glad it inspired a new post from you too.

  3. My grandmother twisted all her buttons off her dresses. So, they made her wear them backwards. That hurt me. All her dresses buttoned up the front. Maybe an apron with the bib would have kept her from destroying all her dresses.

    1. I'm so sorry they did that. The disease already robs dignity, there is no need to make it worse.
Maybe an apron or a fidget toy would have helped. I'm glad we are making efforts to make care more humane.

  4. What a great idea. I'd never heard of activity aprons. Luckily my 94 year old mum doesn't tend to fiddle with things. I like the idea of an annoying strip of velcro. I shall bear that in mind if I'm ever shunted into a care home!

    1. I recently saw a similar idea in the form of an armband, cuff type of thing so the apron idea was new but familiar at the same time.
I was briefly tempted to put a whistle on it!
