To my nieces and nephew on starting high school

Dear High Schooler,

So, high school times are here!

You will be the little fish in the big pond for a little while, which is how it will feel most times in life when you start something new but that’s okay because the more you do it, the better you get and you won’t be the newbie for too long.

You will remember your high school days all your life and it’s up to you to make good memories. Try different things, get out of your comfort zone, if it works out, it will be good and if it doesn’t work out, at least you will have tried and the worst experiences make the best stories! It also grows your brain and who doesn’t want a big brain?

Hang around people who are good to you. If someone is confusing and you’re not sure if they are good to you, that means they are not. Don’t give energy to people who aren’t good to you.

There was a great American poet called Maya Angelou who said “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” I think she meant to do your best but if you find out there’s a better way, don’t waste time on regret, just improve. It works for everything: school work, relationships, health…...all the important stuff.

I hope you enjoy the adventure of high school, I hope you work hard enough to be proud of yourself and I hope you do lots of different stuff so that you can figure out what you love and what you are good at.

Things will go bad sometimes, sometimes it’s bad luck and sometimes it’s because we make silly choices, the most important part is to learn the lesson and have another shot. Sometimes success is just a numbers game, the more times you try the more likely it is that you win.

I’m around, I’m interested and if there’s a way I can help, I’ll help. Remember that.

Enough of my gas bagging!

Enjoy the adventure of YLH (Your Local High)

Aunty Kylie

  1. I was never a good aunt, and now I am a great aunt. And most (almost all) have finished their formal schooling.
I wish I had been such an aunt as you are. I wish I had an aunt like you. And I wish that my younger self had been open to yours and Maya Angelou's sage advice.

    1. The starting high school letter is an attempt to make up for all the stuff I don't do

    1. The more frustrating or silly a situation is, the better the story, right?

    1. Thanks Joe. Somehow I don't think they will understand because that's the nature of youth but maybe it's enough that I try

  4. For somebody who finished high school 63 years ago I couldn't agree more when you say , " You will remember high school the rest of your life."

    1. We go to high school as children and come out adults (ish) , such a lot of change in those years

  5. That really is an excellent letter. I wish that I had written something similar to my Godchildren. It'll be many years until my nephews and nieces are starting secondary school.

    1. Thanks Michelle. It's my little rebellion against the focus on marks and achievement. People achieve if they are doing what they are meant to and have a positive environment

  7. The schools here too have reopened after the shut down and the children have been advised to wear masks and observe social distancing protocols. Is that not applicable over there?

    1. They are asked to be physically distant. Masks are not mandatory in schools but they are in public transport on the way to school

  8. When you are an adolescent if can be very hard to find the words to explain your innermost anxieties. It can be equally hard to find someone who can both listen and guide with genuine emotional intelligence.

    1. Thank you. I'm not very involved at all so I hope they remember the little bits I do actually manage to think of
