the gloves slap onto the bench and a few steps later the hairnet comes off, i lose the blue coat and rip the shoe covers from my feet, i re-enter the world and lunch has begun.
i slice cheese onto my sourdough and shut the sandwich press, rummage for the choice bits of the weekend papers or some interesting junk mail.
a slight sizzle reminds me of my lunch, i slap it onto a plate and sit. ripping the bread into pieces allows the cheese to ooze out and i dangle strings into my mouth. inevitably somebody will make a smart remark. on a good day i will have a rapid and witty response, other days i will grin like a mad thing.
i will try to read but conversation will draw me in and i will scan the words with unseeing eyes.
if it's tuesday the man who has sold me sweets for the last seven years, who i talk to more often than some of my friends but who is known to me only as "the lolly man" will blow his novelty horn and i wander out to see what discounted chocolates he can tempt me with. for maybe the first time in six hours i will see natural light and reacquaint myself with the weather.
my return to the lunch room sees me make a coffee and gobble one of my newly acquired delicacies. again, somebody will laugh good naturedly at my predictability.
suddenly, the half hour is over. i rush to gulp my drink, to throw out my wrapper, to put the dishes in the dishwasher and wrap up any incomplete conversation.
i slip in the automatic doors in the nick of time. hat first, coat, shoes, peek through the window as if i have forgotten what my work space looks like. i push open the airlock door. another lunch over.

hot buns
after a very hard day yesterday i retreated to bed very early so this morning i was salivating as anticipated my breakfast....a fruity, spicy, buttery, golden toasted hot cross bun.
and they were all gone.
i suppose it was optimistic of me to think there may be any left from a pack of six delivered the day before. we do have two teenagers in the house......
and two growing girls....
and me

collection
my six foot baby boy went to china on tuesday and i expect it will be a grand adventure. he has gone on a school trip, tagging along with the mandarin students, keeping the numbers up and the costs down.
he has called a couple of times, the first he was obviously very happy and it was making him very silly. it was almost a relief when the call dropped out because i couldna make head nor tail of what he was telling me and i was being charged by the minute for the confusion!
yesterday they visited a place where they could watch a traditional style of weaving and liam was the only boy of the group to get out of the bus! yes, the boy visited a handcraft centre with a collection of girls. who knows what that did to his coolness rating with the boys but i was immensely, unbearably proud. proud that he stood up for what he wanted to do, proud that he made himself the odd one out in a bunch of teenaged girls who he doesn't know, proud that he recognised and took an opportunity he might never have again.

theme thursday kisses
little hands hold a curious rodent nose twitching against my face, "mummy, george is giving you a kiss" and so, in intent, is george's guardian
the slobbery innocence of a tiny mouth, not truly pursed, on my face
the kiss-by-proxy of a shared drink
the kiss of nature in a rainbow
butterfly kisses on smooth young cheeks at bed time
a passionate embrace
the kiss of the Father in the warm winter sun
or the first warm breeze of spring

love fest
hi therewhen i woke up and checked blogdom this morning (some 15 hours ago) i noticed that Mr C over at "The thoughts of a special needs teacher" had a rather excellent post up. as i went about my morning it was on my mind to pimp him a little and i went back to leave a comment only to find that in the interim he had, in fact, written a post pimping me! it was beginning to look like a love fest, which by the way, yields some interesting results when you do a google image search
now, i had really hoped to write a theme thursday post but i am getting a bit short of time given that we only have 75 minutes of thursday left in this part of the world and i would rather like to be in bed before that. i still need to shower and tidy the kitchen so i reckon i'm pushing it just a tad and in the middle of a wet and cold sydney winter i'm not too inspired about summer
i think if one was to have any real kind of a love fest summer would be the time, though, dont you? i mean, you know,

the flimsy fashions,
the mangos (sexy or what?),
the seafood (oysters!),
the beach..............................

Theme Thursday: Whoops!

One day, a little over a year ago I wanted to attend the funeral of a man who had been a neighbour and attended the same church as me. He was a quiet man and despite him being around for my whole life I wouldn't say that I knew him well.....
Anyway, on this particular day I was babysitting my niece who was about 18 months old at the time. I took her to the funeral with me and we did well for a while but then she got crotchety. I patted, I cuddled, I offered food but eventually I decided to retreat to the foyer of the church where the crotchetiness continued. The men from the funeral parlour waited in the foyer for the service to finish and watched me as I tried to pacify this cranky wee girl. I picked her up, she wanted down. I put her down, she wanted up. I rummaged in my bag looking for treasures to amuse a small child. I picked her up, I put her down. I pointed at objects and people. I counted cars. I picked her up, I put her down. And on it went.
Little did I realise that as I performed this mini workout my carefully chosen culottes were working themselves loose. They slipped down, further down, and further still until just as they probably were about to drop off I noticed this wardrobe malfunction. I wonder if the funeral assistants had noticed a good four inches of funereal black knicker on full display !
ps: don't forget the competition
